Matthew Henry’s Method for Prayer

The great preacher George Whitefield read through Matthew Henry’s Commentary on the Bible four times on his knees. It was the main commentary that he read as he prepared his sermons. If you look at Whitefield’s preaching and compare his sermons with Matthew Henry’s Commentary you can clearly see the influence that Matthew Henry’s commentary had on him.

The same Matthew Henry who wrote that commentary also wrote a book called “A Method for Prayer Using Scriptural Expressions”. What Matthew Henry did is he took an outline of prayer that involved adoration, confession, intercession, thanksgiving, petition and supplication and he filled in Scripture verses that came to his mind on each topic. For over three hundred years now this has been an influential book to teach Christians how to pray the Bible back to God.
